How Nanjing Built a Smart Energy System for the Low-Carbon City

At the 15th Annual Assembly of the World Green Design Organization held in Brussels, the Nanjing Southern New Town Renewable Energy District Energy Supply Project was awarded the International Green Design Award for Energy Transition and Urban Sustainability, standing out among hundreds of global submissions.

The project integrates sewage-source heat pumps, solar photovoltaics, and energy storage into a unified system, supported by a smart energy management platform. It now supplies efficient, low-carbon energy to approximately 2.4 million square meters of buildings, cutting annual standard coal consumption by an estimated 12,000 tonnes and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30,000 tonnes.

Jury members described the project as a “replicable and scalable model for urban regional energy systems,” offering a practical pathway for cities worldwide seeking low-carbon transformation amid rapid urbanization.
