The 8th APEC Ministerial Meeting on Human Resources Development will soon be held in Nanjing. As a representative investor from APEC member economies operating in the city, LG Energy Solution’s growth story here serves as a compelling example.
Back in 2003, LG Energy Solution set up its battery manufacturing base in Nanjing, producing small batteries, automotive power batteries, and energy storage batteries. Over more than two decades, the South Korean firm has continued to increase investment and expand production in Nanjing, with cumulative investment now nearly US$10 billion and a workforce of close to 10,000.
In January 2025, LG Energy Solution stepped up its commitment by establishing its China headquarters in the Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone. This is the 10th company the LG Group has established in the zone. The headquarters coordinates procurement, sales, R&D, and investment for LG Energy Solution’s China subsidiaries, manages a cross-border cash pool, and oversees investment across its upstream and downstream industrial chains. Choi Ji-woong, President of LG Energy Solution China, said the establishment of the China headquarters “conveys the company’s confidence in the Chinese market and its recognition of Jiangsu’s business environment.”
The company’s technological footprint in Nanjing continues to expand. Its Nanjing plant is currently building a pilot production line for sodium-ion batteries, with plans to produce samples in 2026 and achieve mass production in 2027. More than 40 local suppliers and partner enterprises have grown alongside LG Energy Solution within this industrial ecosystem. In 2023, the total output value of enterprises in the LG industrial chain in the Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone exceeded US$18 billion.
From a single factory to the establishment of its China headquarters, and now to the launch of cutting-edge technology production lines, LG Energy Solution’s more than two decades in Nanjing reflect the shared growth between a multinational enterprise and the city.
