According to the China Urban Science & Entrepreneurship Report 2025, Nanjing ranks third nationwide in tech entrepreneurship, trailing only Beijing and Shenzhen. On the global stage, the city also shines, placing 9th among the world’s “Best Tech Clusters”.

Nanjing hosts over 50 universities, more than 120 national research platforms, 96 academicians, and over one million students. The city is home to 358 municipal research institutions, over 10,000 high-tech enterprises, and more than 21,000 registered tech-focused SMEs.

In terms of scientific impact, Nanjing scientists were recognized in Science’s 2024 Top 10 Breakthroughs for discovering the earliest known multicellular eukaryote fossils. Additionally, two of the 2024 “Top 10 Advances in Chinese Science” by the National Natural Science Foundation come from Nanjing.
