Nanjing to Pioneer Wholly Foreign-Owned Hospitals

China’s latest pilot plan allows wholly foreign-owned hospitals to be established in major cities, including Nanjing. The initiative, launched by the National Health Commission and three other government departments, aims to open up the medical sector, introduce high-quality international resources, and optimize the business environment. The work plan explicitly excludes traditional Chinese medicine hospitals and prohibits the foreign acquisition of public hospitals.

Why Was Nanjing Selected?

As an open city with many foreign enterprises and expatriates, Nanjing has a strong demand for diverse and high-quality healthcare. Wholly foreign-owned hospitals can meet the needs of both local residents and the international community.

Nanjing has been managing joint-venture medical institutions since 2000. Its extensive experience and high management standards make it an ideal location to pilot foreign-owned hospitals.

With a large population, advanced healthcare infrastructure, and a robust investment climate, Nanjing attracts significant foreign investment. Its strong international connections further support the success of this initiative.
