A. O. Smith

A. O. Smith, a renowned North American manufacturer of residential and commercial water heaters, water purification systems, and boilers, has established itself as a powerhouse in the Asia-Pacific region through strategic investments and a commitment to innovation. In 1998, A. O. Smith made a significant move by investing $30 million to establish a production base in Nanjing, recognizing the city’s potential as a hub for manufacturing excellence.

In a bold and timely decision, just hours after China’s official accession to the WTO in 2001, A. O. Smith announced an additional $20 million investment to build the largest water heater manufacturing and R&D base in the Asia-Pacific region, right in Nanjing. This move not only underscored the company’s confidence in the Chinese market but also its strategic foresight in positioning Nanjing as a critical node in its global operations.

By 2004, the advantages of Nanjing’s favorable business environment and rich talent pool prompted A. O.  Smith to establish its Global Engineering R&D Center in the city. This transformation elevated the Nanjing base from a production site to a pivotal center for product development, technology application, and engineering services on a global scale.

In less than a decade, A. O. Smith’s consecutive investments in Nanjing propelled the company through a “triple jump”—from a regional production facility to a regional R&D center, and ultimately, to a global R&D powerhouse. This strategic evolution has significantly boosted A. O. Smith’s market presence, securing a 25.17% share of the Chinese water heater market and firmly establishing the company as the industry leader.
